Realities Of Hiking Cinque Terre

Hiking Cinque Terre is the best of both worlds. Exercise and plenty of beautiful views! Depending on the season and your experience level it will determine the hike you choose to take. There are several pathways and options all laid out for you.

Coastal Hike

The easier hiking option and one with you guessed it coastline views. I started in Monterosso and ended in Vernazza. On this particular path, the way TO Vernazza has carved out steps and a few railings. On the way down or From Vernazza, there is no distinction it’s mostly large rocks are an uneven pathway to get your footing. Some parts of the trail are single file only and you need to take turns going across because there are people walking from both directions.

Now let’s talk about views! There are plenty of vantage points of Monterosso, Vernazza, and coastline that are almost like a reward for climbing straight up. Yes, I mean straight up and you can’t see the top at some parts of the hike haha. You can choose to stop and enjoy the view, take pictures, catch your breath, wish you wore the right hiking shoes, etc.

Now, depending on the season there may only be certain coastal hiking paths available. When I went at the end of March, this was one of the only paths available. The weather determines this factor and with it still technically being towards the winter months, it wasn’t safe enough to hike. Usually, most tourists that visit take the Coastal Hike also known as the blue path.

Inland Path

Some do travel to Cinque Terre for it’s amazing and challenging hiking paths. This is one of them. There is less of a coastal view, more of the inland scenery, and you’ll want to watch your step. The Inland Trail is for more experienced hikers and weaves in and out of the hilltops. Click to view a Map of Cinque Terre to get a glimpse of the hike. It’s easier to hike to all 5 cities on the Coastal Hike. The inland doesn’t stop at each. For the advanced extreme hikers, there is another set of trails that weave in and out of the Inland and Coastal paths. Depending on the season this may not be open to tourists, especially in winter.

Did I mention that both paths are free to hike? Just be safe and aware of your surrounds and other hikers! The pathways are small, narrow, most without a railing, and like I said single file. I haven’t heard of injury or harm on the trail but just be prepared. Pack a small backpack for water and snacks if you need it, and sunblock for the summer months.

I loved my hike to Vernazza from Monterosso which is where you get the famous Vernazza Cinque picture. For more on Cinque Terre, check out my blog post on where to stay, eat, and more.
