Ultimate Guide To A Tivoli Day Trip

Tivoli is a small town about 30 minutes outside of Rome. This makes it the perfect distance to have a Tivoli Day Trip from Rome. There are several hidden gems to explore here and the most beautiful gardens! Not many know about this city and the small town beauty that it has to offer. Check out what there is to explore on your Tivoli Day Trip.

How To Get There

To travel to Tivoli from Rome I took a Cotral Bus. These are different from the normal city bus because they run to surrounding cities. You can purchase a ticket from taking the Metro towards Rebibbia and get off at Ponte Mammalo. There is a small shop to purchase for Tivoli.  It was  €2,20 and only took about 30/40 minutes to get there.

The confusing part is that there is no grand station or anything to get off at. They are smaller stops (I missed mine and had to walk back a few minutes) and depending on what you want to see first you need to pay attention to the stop names announced in Italian. It’s not a large town so anything you want to see is in walking distance if you’re up for it. There are signs around town to the other Villas and things to see.

For the center of town get off here at Piazza Giuseppe Garibaldi and follow signs for any of the activities listed below.

Tivoli Day Trip

Sights  To See In Tivoli

                    1. Piazza Giuseppe Garibaldi
                    2. Villa D’Este
                    3. Santa Maria Maggiore
                    4. Villa Adriana
                    5. Parco Villa Gregoriana

Villa D’Este

was built and designed to have a magnificent garden in the back. It’s large enough that they give you a map to walk around. The Villa itself is on the smaller side but the main attraction is the gardens. There are tall hedges so that when you come around each corner it’s like another surprise of beauty and wonder. I felt like I was in Alice and Wonderland with how it was designed and each turn I took there was something different and even more beautiful than the last.

It cost €8 to get in and that covers both the Villa and Gardens. This is an activity that I wanted to take my time with so plan for it to take a little longer than usual.

Santa Maria Maggiore

This is on your way to Villa D’Este (right next to) so you can have a look inside either before or after visiting the gardens. This church I thought was worth a mention because of how beautiful it is! The entire center of the church has chandeliers hung from the ceiling, beautiful floors, etc.

Hadrian’s Villa or Villa Adriana

Explore the beautiful ruins and landscape of Villa Adriana. It’s a little bit of a walk from Villa d’Este but with a bus ride or the right walking shoes you would be fine.

Parco Villa Gregoriana

Located on the edge of the cities acropolis. Venture to this beautiful park and waterfalls to see its beauty up close! It’s close to Villa d’Este and easy to see both in walking distance.

I packed a lunch to take with me but there are plenty of restaurants in town to choose from. The Central Fountain in Piazza Giuseppe Garibaldi is nice to sit outside in one of the cafes. If you start early on a day trip and check with the bus schedule it’s possible to see everything on this list.
