Female Solo Travel Hacks For Bali

Most people who want to take a solo trip are nervous at first and especially as a woman would like to pick the right destination. I have had several solo adventures and I can say that without a doubt Bali is an amazing choice! It’s so easy to get around, the people are friendly, and most importantly I felt safe.

Getting Around

Navigating Bali is a pretty easy just depends on what your preferences are. You can rent a motorbike (if you have experience driving) which is not only cheap but convenient to avoid traffic. If you don’t have motorbike experiences then I would recommend GoJek which is a car service like Uber/Lyft but they have motorbikes, cars, vans, etc. Pretty much everyone in Bali is a driver of some sort but if you have the app it makes it easier to get transportation when you need it.

You will need to get a sim card for this to work because the app asks you to enter a phone number and confirmation code. The sim card might also be a good idea if you are there for more than a few days. Especially traveling solo you don’t want to be caught out somewhere without service.

Where To Stay

Popular areas to stay are Canggu, Seminyak, and Ubud. I stayed in Ubud and Seminyak but would go to Canggu often for some great food. Ubud was amazing to be in the trees, nature, have rice fields and jungle to explore. It’s definitely a beautiful area to explore. Seminyak in my opinion was way too crowded, over touristy, and more western culture than anything. If I were going to stay in that area again I would Opt for Canggu instead because you have a little bit of everything. Rice fields, beach, great food, and the vibe is a little bit more calm than Seminyak.

I stayed in Airbnb’s the entire time but hostels are also a great way to meet people when you travel. I had been staying in hostels for awhile at this point and wanted some me time. But I still found ways to meet fellow travelers. It’s so easy and a place that a lot of nomads reside and travel to. If you’re interested in hostels Hostel World is a great site/App to help you choose the right one

Budget

Bali is extremely affordable! My Airbnb in Udud was only $13/night and it was really nice, newly renovated, breakfast included, and the most comfortable bed I found in Asia. All of that for only $13 USD. Food is usually around $5-8 per meal but you can get it cheaper depending on where you go. I am Vegan/Gluten Free so eating out was maybe a dollar or more in expense. And transportation on the GoJek motorbike is the cheapest way to get around other than renting a bike. I took a motorbike taxi for less and a dollar!

You really won’t break the bank here and if you budget what you want to spend before the trip it makes it easier to keep track of. My tip would be to take cash with you and exchange it there. That way you don’t have an exchange rate fee for taking money out of the ATM.

Activities

Is it safe to do activities solo?? Yes! You might be by yourself but you aren’t technically alone. There are so many solo travelers in Bali doing the exact same thing. If you stay in a hostel a group of you can go and do something or on any boat ride, tour, etc you always have people with you.

I went to Bali Swing and booked my ticket solo and met these awesome girls in our van transport. We ended up taking pictures for each other since it was an Instagram hot spot. That was probably THE most touristy thing I did there but definitely worth it. When I didn’t have other people there I would also just ask a random stranger to take my picture, but use your intuition so your phone or camera doesn’t get stolen!

Tips For Safety

Honestly I felt pretty safe in Bali and I was walking at night sometimes. Not the smartest decision on my part but I didn’t feel threatened in any way. A lot of women are scared to travel solo at first because of all of the stories you hear but truth is any travel story can also happen in your own hometown.

So with that being said just be aware of your surroundings, wear a cross body bag and keep it in front of you to reduce stealing, don’t be on your phone constantly, and take locks with you for luggage if you decide to stay at a hostel. Most people are nice at hostels but you never know. All of these tips are pretty common and things we are already aware of but it’s always a good reminder.

If solo travel is calling your name then Bali would be a great first experience! Budget travel is my favorite because then you are able to see plenty of places on your Bucket List without having to break the bank. With this list of budget friendly places to visit you will have an amazing time !
