How To Do Central Texas Like A Local

Texas has a lot of different local traditions, hang outs, and events to attend. The rodeo, tubing, road-tripping for wildflowers, BBQ’s, etc. If you’re visiting Central Texas learn what the locals do for fun! It really is true everything is bigger in Texas especially if you have to drive across the state. With all of the large and small towns to explore check out what to do when you visit.

Small Town Tour

Central Texas has some awesome small towns to check out that each have their own charm. New Braunfels, Greune, San Marcos, Wimberly, and Luling, Bastrop, Brenham are all small town that I recommend checking out! Each will have a variety of boutique and unique shops, amazing restaurants with heaps of barbecue, most are on a river so there will be beautiful views, and not to mention the small town feel that’s like stepping into a time capsule .

In Greune I recommend checking out Greune Hall which is the oldest functioning country dance hall in Texas. The inside doesn’t look like much but the atmosphere there with a live band and line dancing is the BEST! Wimberly has some interesting river restaurants to explore plus nature spots I’ll go over when you scroll down. There’s also a BlueBell Factory that you can take a tour of in Brenham if you’re a big ice cream fan!

Floating The River

If you’re going to do Central Texas like a local then that means floating the river! You can float the Comal, San Marcos, Guadeloupe, and Frio Rivers in Central Texas. What do mean float the river? Check out the video below to find out!

Bring a float, rent one, have your cooler full of snacks and drink of choice, plenty of SUN SCREEN, and WATER!! If you’re on a float that lasts a couple of hours you really need to hydrate! I can’t stress that enough because people are drinking, forget to drink water, and get up to get out of the river and end up being way more intoxicated than they thought. *cough* not speaking from experience or anything haha.

Eating Vegan In BBQ Nation

Eating Vegan in Texas can be a challenge in and of itself let alone out here. Central Texas is definitely BBQ Nation!  However, if you’re a Vegan like myself then you need to know where those little spots are. Binge Kitchen, Earth Burger, Industry are all in San Marcos, Muck and Fuss in New Braunfels, Gristmel on the river in Greune, to name a few!

For the carnivores out there then try out famous and delicious restaurants like The Salt Lick, Blacks BBQ, Kreuz Market, Smitty’s and Hats County BBQ.

Nature Hangouts

Jacob’s Well is a natural well/spring that goes deep below. Divers have explored caves and crevices below making the exploration interesting! It’s about a 20-minute drive outside of town. Hiking is free around the area but if you want to swim there is a fee. The Blue Hole is another beautiful nature adventure near Wimberly. You have to make a reservation to swim and the money goes to preserving the area and making sure that it stays clean and in its natural state.
