Solo Travel Tips For Millennials On A Budget

Solo travel has been marked as dangerous, selfish, etc. You name it, whatever negative the media or maybe your family have expressed that to you. But the reality is that traveling solo especially as a millennial is so much more than that. Yes there are bad people in the world but you have a larger chance of something happening to you in your home town than traveling. I’ve been able to expose myself to different  cultures, ways of life, and people. Now had I listened to the media, I wouldn’t have. But with these solo travel tips for millennials on a budget you can too!

Myths About Solo Travel

The biggest myth is that you will be lonely and won’t be able to meet people. WRONG so so wrong on this one! When you are traveling solo and because we are social creatures you end up meeting SO MANY people vs if you were in a duo or group. From having a random conversation at a cafe, people in the lobby of your hotel, while you’re out and about in the city, etc. It’s almost impossible not to meet people unless you are trying really hard to keep to yourself.

Its’s not safe! Like I said above it’s more likely for something to happen in your own hometown. But I do want you to so your research. So don’t stay in a not so great part of town, be aware of your surroundings, read reviews, and recommendations from people who have visited there. The internet will be your research best friend and then just watch your six when you’re alone. Nothing you wouldn’t do at night walking to your car anyway (well for women at least haha)

Don’t drink the water! Ok this one is not a myth but one you should actually take seriously. There are certain countries that when you travel there you shouldn’t drink the water. I have had travel vaccines for Hepatitis A and Typhoid because of the water in Southeast Asia. That also applies for many countries and areas on the globe. For more on Travel Vaccines check out my post on Do I Really Need Travel Vaccines?

Travel On A Budget

Traveling solo as a Millennial you don’t have all of the funds to spare on your travel adventure. So that leaves you to budget travel tips. Cheap Accommodations

My favorite ways to find cheaper accommodation than staying in a hotel are Hostel World and Airbnb. Hostel World is you guessed it for HOSTELS. They are budget friendly and Hostel World rates these places so you can see reviews, cost, pictures, and even contact them to ask questions. This is also a great way to meet people!

The other is Airbnb which you can choose an entire apartment , house, condo, etc to stay in. This can be less expensive than staying in a hotel and have the comforts of home. For more check out 5 Ways To Save on Hotels

Cheap Flights

Flights can be one of the most expensive parts to travel, but it doesn’t have to be. With the travel apps and websites I use to cut cost on flight you will be surprised at how little you can fly for. I flew from LA to Bangkok for $380! Yes you read that right and my flight from Houston to Singapore was around the same. If you know when to buy and wait for those prices to drop flights can be affordable!

I use Hopper and Skyscanner to get cheaper flights. You can find both of them in your app store but only Skyscanner works both on desktop and mobile!

Influencers

Now the Millennials have really coined this terms and ran with it! I myself have been able to travel for less by influencing. This means because of my travel blog, Instagram, and Pinterest, I have been able to leverage that to stay in accommodations for free. This isn’t easy to find and you have to do a lot of emailing. Some companies will or won’t work with influencers in general because some still don’t know much about it. If you keep searching then you can find the right one to work with. And I do mean work with. It’s not just a chance to stay there for free but you have a job to do. That means taking pictures, videos, and really giving an honest representation of the place and your opinion.

Anything that I post for the places I stay at are my honest opinion and I really mean that.

So using influencing for solo travel as a millennial has worked for me because I’m transparent, honest, and have the engaged  following to back it up. As a budget travel and fitness brand I pride myself on transparency which I know has been the concern with influencers. BUT if I can comfortably compare a famous coffee house to hot liquid dirt I think you’ll find I don’t hold my filter when it comes to what I do/don’t like.

Budget travel doesn’t have to be a dirty word and you can see and experience so many different place while not breaking the bank. I love to share my tips with others in hope that they too can travel the world! Because it’s not just about taking that perfect Instagram photo but actually stepping into another culture, way of life, and appreciating humans for who we are.
